T-shirt

Why Do I Wear Hanfu? A Cultural Journey of Identity and Everyday Aesthetics

As a Han Chinese, what are our traditional clothes? This question arose five years ago while helping my son with a social studies assignment, and it quietly transformed my way of life.

This article is my story with Hanfu—a journey into culture, and into myself.

👘 What is Hanfu?

How is it different from the qipao?

Hanfu is the traditional attire of the Han ethnic group, spanning thousands of years with diverse styles, yet sharing core features:

  • Cross-collar, right-over-left closure (交領右衽):** The left lapel overlaps the right, forming a "Y" neckline.

  • Loose robes and wide sleeves (寬衣博袖):** Flowing and elegant, especially in formal styles.

  • Hidden ties instead of buttons (隱帶繫扣):** Uses ribbons for fastening, emphasizing harmony in design.

📍 In contrast, the qipao is a modernized, form-fitting, high-slit one-piece dress, differing vastly from Hanfu in era and essence.

🕰 The Evolution of Hanfu

| Dynasty | Characteristics |

|---------|-----------------|

| Han | Deep robes (深衣) and curved hems (曲裾) took shape. |

| Tang | Broad sleeves, vibrant colors, influenced by Central Asia; more open styles. |

| Song | Understated elegance, emphasizing refinement. |

| Ming | More conservative; longer tops, shorter visible skirts; round collars replaced Song-style parallel collars. |

| Qing | Manchu-style clothing dominated; Hanfu faded. |

📌 In recent years, with cultural revival, Hanfu has re-entered daily life, embraced by young people as part of modern fashion.

My Hanfu Journey: Began with My Son’s Homework

A social studies assignment made me ponder:

"What is our ethnicity? Our mother tongue? Our traditional clothing?"

As my son learned Hakka, I began learning about Hanfu. From curiosity to trying it on myself, studying its forms—the moment I wore it, I felt a dialogue with history.

💡 How to Wear Hanfu? Styling Tips

🎯 My rule: Wear what suits you best.

📍 With so many styles—Tang, Song, Ming, high-waisted, parallel-collar—you must try them to find your match.

I recommend Hanfu experience shops like "Spring Blossom" (春花秘境), where you can try various styles with full-service rentals (outfits + hair/makeup).

📿 Favorite Accessories:

- Jade bangles & pendants: Traditional and ethereal.

- Beaded bracelets: Subtle accents.

- Minimalist hairpins: Instant elegance.

💡 Pro tip: Walk slowly to let the hem flow—graceful movements amplify Hanfu’s charm!

❤️ Hanfu in Daily Life: Modern Fusion

I love blending Hanfu elements into everyday wear, like:

- Pairing Hanfu tops with jeans.

- Wearing hairpins with a simple T-shirt hairstyle.

- Using Song-style outer robes as spring/autumn coats.

🧠 This is my take on "Chinese learning as the foundation, Western learning for practical use" (中學為體,西學為用)—making tradition a natural part of life, not just for festivals or performances.

🎀 Closing: Wearing Culture, Finding Myself

Wearing Hanfu isn’t just about beauty—it’s reclaiming cultural touchstones. From my child’s question to my own exploration, I’ve found my generation’s cultural echo.

"Culture is the story you wear."

What about you? Have you imagined how you’d look in Hanfu?
